The Drum Set Crash Course
Russ' first book with Warner Brothers publications "The Drum Set Crash Course" is an exciting new approach to learning the art of drumming. The book is designed in a encyclopedia type format that covers over 18 different music styles. This book helps you develop the fundamental understanding of these various music styles and what is required to perform them on the drum kit.
The topics covered for each music style includes:
Style History - A description of the origin of the particular music style.
Fundamentals of each style, such as:
- Primary Pulse - the underlying subdivision of the style.
- The Foundational Instruments -the most important instruments of the drum kit that help form the feel of the groove and music.
- Time Focus - instruments in the band and of the kit that are the focus of time for the particular music style.
- Drum Set Mix - an approach to control the various volume levels while playing the instruments of the drum set. Different styles require volume considerations for the proper effectiveness and musicality of the grooves and fills.
- Drum Machine Practice Pattern - the recommended pattern to program on a drum machine or sequencer. This pattern will be used throughout the lesson to solidify the development of the particular style.
- Basic Groove - the most basic groove of the particular style.
Developmental Keys of each style such as:
- Mental Focal Point - the primary conceptual focus for further development of the groove
- Physical Focal Point - the most important factor to help develop independence and facility in the particular style.
- Developmental Exercise - an exercise that will help develop the important physical factors of the grooves and fills.
- Style Study - further exploration of each style
- Groove Variations - exercises for the further development of the grooves for each style.
- Fills - this section contains both developmental keys and variations for further developing fill and solo ideas in the particular music style.
